A standard project box may fit the main component but leave its ports in the wrong place or its lid too close to a cable. Custom plastic enclosures let you plan the case around the actual arrangement. For an early project, that can mean a simple housing sample to check layout before deciding how the finished assembly should work.
Loot Haven 3D in Columbia, Missouri reviews custom FDM printed cases and enclosure prototypes. Send an existing model or the measurements needed to develop one. Start with the parts that go inside the case, not just the outside shape you want.
Measure the complete inside arrangement
Record each component’s width, length and height, including connectors, raised parts and anything extending below it. For a board, include mounting-hole locations relative to a consistent reference edge. Photos are useful context, but measurements are needed for a fitted case.
Leave space in the brief for cables, plugs and the way components will be inserted. A connector may fit through an opening while the larger plug attached to it does not. Explain whether a cable stays connected during assembly or must be added afterward.
| Enclosure detail | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Internal parts | Measured dimensions, photographs and intended positions. |
| Mounting | Hole locations, fastener information and surfaces that need support. |
| Ports and controls | Opening locations, plug dimensions and access requirements. |
| Lid | How often it must open and whether tools can be used. |
| Use environment | Expected handling, temperature, moisture and other relevant conditions. |
Closure options for custom plastic enclosures
A lid needs to support the way you will use the project. A case opened once for assembly has different priorities from one opened regularly for adjustments. Discuss a screw-fastened, sliding or other closure as a design choice to be reviewed, rather than selecting an appearance alone.
Think through the assembly sequence. Can a tool reach the fasteners after the components are installed? Can the lid close without pushing on a wire? If you expect frequent access, tell us which part needs to remain reachable. A rough drawing showing “open here” can be more helpful than a polished exterior rendering.
Allow for fit adjustments
A digital opening drawn at exactly the size of a mating part is not necessarily the right printed fit. Prusa’s modeling guide explains that clearances need to account for material, geometry and print conditions; there is no single tolerance that works for every design.
Identify the features where fit matters most. If the entire case is large, a smaller test section may be a useful way to check a connector opening or lid detail first. The actual parts should be used for the fit check wherever possible. Record the results before approving more copies.
Describe material requirements in terms of use
Instead of requesting “the strongest plastic,” explain what the case will encounter. Will it remain on an indoor desk? Will it be carried frequently? Will another component produce heat near a wall? These details matter more than a general material preference.
Our PLA versus PETG guide can help you understand the options discussed during quoting. A printed project case does not come with an assumed electrical, fire, waterproof or impact rating. If your application needs a specific rating, state it before ordering so the suitability of a printed part can be reviewed.
Prepare the file or a measured sketch
For a supplied model, include its units, revision and critical dimensions. Read the file preparation guide and explain which dimensions can be changed. If the design still needs CAD work, provide drawings from more than one view with a shared measurement reference.
Mark any detail you are still deciding. It is better to identify an uncertain port location than to print a complete case around an assumption. The product prototype guide explains how a sample can help answer these questions before a larger order.
Ask for a quote with a test plan
Size, geometry, design time, material, quantity and finishing affect the quote. Include both the number of sample cases you need now and any later quantity you are considering. Give your deadline and describe whether the first part is for an appearance review or an assembly check.
Send an enclosure project brief to Loot Haven 3D with your files or sketches, measured components and use requirements. A clear description of what must fit and how the case opens gives the design a practical starting point.
More ordering questions
Can a printed project case have a removable battery door?
Describe the battery dimensions, removal direction and how often the door will open. Ask for the door and retention method to be checked as a separate feature. A case that fits the battery may still leave insufficient room to remove it.
Can a custom enclosure use metal threaded inserts?
Request inserts as a quoted assembly detail, with the required fastener size and access direction. Their fit and installation need a design review. Do not assume hardware or insert installation is included in a printed-case order.
Does adding a gasket make a 3D printed enclosure waterproof?
No waterproof rating should be inferred from a gasket alone. The complete case, joints, fasteners and openings need evaluation for the specified exposure. If a rating is required, establish the testing and certification requirements before accepting a decorative or prototype case.
Can a custom plastic case provide EMI shielding?
Ordinary printed plastic should not be assumed to provide it. Specify the shielding requirement and ask about a suitable complete approach, including any additional components or finish. Do not equate an enclosure shape with demonstrated shielding performance.
Can an enclosure have a hinged lid instead of screws?
It can be proposed for design review. Provide the opening angle, clearance around the case and frequency of use. Prusa notes that moving fits need clearance; a hinge sample should be checked before relying on repeated opening.
Can I change a port location without ordering an entire new case?
Possibly if the case was designed with a separate removable panel. For an integrated wall, a new print or reviewed modification may be needed. Discuss replaceable panels while the design is still being developed.
Can a custom case include a mounting bracket?
Include the mounting surface, available space, fastener information and loads in the project brief. A separate bracket and a case with integrated mounting points need different design reviews. The quote should identify whether the bracket and attachment hardware are included.
