Custom 3D Printing Cost: What Goes Into Your Quote?

Custom 3D printing cost depends on the whole project. There is no single price per 3D print because two objects with similar outside dimensions can require very different amounts of material, machine time, design work, support, assembly, and finishing. A useful quote looks at those requirements rather than multiplying one simple rate.

Size is only the beginning

A larger model usually uses more material and takes longer to print, but geometry matters just as much. A hollow display piece may use less material than a smaller, dense functional part. Tall models can also occupy a printer for many hours even when they are relatively light.

Print time affects cost

Machine time is one of the biggest variables in FDM printing. Layer height, nozzle size, wall count, infill, supports, speed, and model orientation all influence how long a job takes. A detailed model printed at a fine layer height can take substantially longer than a simple part of the same size.

Material changes the quote

PLA and PETG are common options, while specialized materials can cost more or require slower printing and additional preparation. The right material should be chosen around the part’s intended use rather than price alone. Using an unsuitable material can make a cheap print expensive if it needs to be remade. Read our PLA vs PETG guide for a practical comparison.

Design work is separate from printing

If you already have a print-ready file, the project can move directly into file review and production planning. If you only have a sketch, photograph, measurements, or an idea, CAD and modeling time becomes part of the project. Simple personalization is different from designing a complex model from scratch.

Supports and difficult geometry

Parts with major overhangs may require support material. Supports add machine time and material, and they may also require cleanup after printing. Sometimes a model can be split into sections or reoriented to reduce supports and improve the final surface.

Finishing and assembly

A raw print costs less than a project that needs multiple sections joined, surface preparation, hardware, painting, or other finishing work. Large props and display pieces often need to be divided into printable sections and assembled after printing.

Quantity can change the economics

For a one-off item, setup and review are concentrated into a single part. For a short production run, the same approved model can be repeated across multiple machines or batches. A sample is useful before larger quantities because it lets you confirm dimensions, appearance, and function before the full run.

How to get a useful quote

Provide the file or reference, approximate dimensions, quantity, intended use, preferred material if known, color or finish, and your deadline. The more complete the request, the easier it is to quote the actual work rather than guess.

Compare quotes with the same project brief

For a useful comparison, send each provider the same file revision, dimensions and quantity. A quote for an unfinished print is different from one that includes design, assembly and a painted surface. Ask which work is included, what approval is needed and whether delivery is included.

Quote item What to confirm
Design and file preparation Is the supplied file ready to print, or does it need modeling, repair or resizing?
Print specification Material, color, final dimensions and any fit requirements.
Sample and revisions Whether a sample is included, what you approve and how changes are quoted.
Finish and assembly Raw print, cleanup, joined sections or a specified decorative finish.
Delivery and schedule Production timing, shipping cost or arranged local pickup.

Ways to keep the project within budget

Start by identifying what must work and what must look polished. A prototype for checking fit may not need the same surface finish as a customer-facing display. A simplified first sample can answer the most important question before you invest in more detailed design. Tell us your budget and priorities so alternatives can be reviewed without changing essential dimensions or function.

For repeated parts, settle the design before approving the full quantity. Changing a logo, mounting hole or size after production starts can mean a revised model and new prints. Our small batch ordering guide explains how sample approval helps keep the specification clear.

3D printing cost FAQs

Can I get a price from a photo?

A photo and approximate dimensions are a useful starting point. If the shape needs to be modeled, more measurements or references may be required before design and printing can be quoted accurately. See how custom design works without a 3D file.

Is ordering one piece possible?

Yes. Loot Haven can quote one piece or one sample. The price reflects the work needed for that particular project; a small quantity does not remove design or setup work.

Why is a filament calculator different from a finished-project quote?

Filament is only one input. File preparation, machine time and human work also matter. Prusa’s guide to calculating print costs explains these separate inputs. Its illustrative figures are not Loot Haven prices.

Does requesting a custom 3D printing quote cost money?

Submitting the quote request form does not charge for or place an order. Loot Haven manually reviews the request, then confirms the scope and price before paid work starts.

What deposit do I pay to start a custom 3D print?

The custom-order process uses a 25% deposit to start agreed work, with the remaining 75% due after approval of the agreed proof or sample and before the batch or dispatch, unless the written quote states otherwise. See the custom order terms.

Is shipping included in a custom 3D printing quote?

Confirm the delivery line in your quote. Custom shipping depends on finished size, weight, packaging and destination; import duties and taxes are separate unless expressly included. The shipping and returns policy explains how shipping is reviewed.

Can my 3D printing quote change if I change the approved design?

Yes. A new size, design, material, finish or quantity can change the work required. Confirm any revised price and timeline before the extra work proceeds. The custom order terms cover scope changes after approval.
